How Insignificant Are We ?

Wow... The earthquake and tsunami in Japan was a real wake-up call! When the earth hiccups, people die. Most of us are entertained on TV or the internet by examples of power such as fighting competitions or humans being overpowered by animals. We are amazed at how powerless humans are at times. I think this is because we think we are the center of the universe. Most of our everyday problems become irrelevant when a major catastrophe happens.

I'm amazed by examples of power, but even more amazed by the powerlessness of humans...
A lightweight UFC fighter or boxer can overwhelm a normal person in a fight.
A heavyweight UFC fighter or boxer can overwhelm a lightweight fighter in a fight.
A bear or gorilla can overwhelm any human in a fight.
A machine, such as a tractor or tank can overwhelm any animal.
A tsunami or hurricane can overwhelm any man-made machine.
A meteor can overwhelm the earth.
The Sun can make-or-break any event in our solar system.
...And ultimately there are powers in the universe that we can't even comprehend... maybe God is one of them?!

We spend our entire lives worrying about the small stuff compared to the power of the universe. We are just a bunch of insignificant specks on a small spinning ball in space. Our future depends on forces that we have no control over. We have to get over the notion that we are the center of the universe and just try to enjoy the time we have!

I take it all back !!!

I overreacted to the notice to show for jury duty (please see the previous post) at U.S. District Court in San Francisco. I was treated fairly and let off by the judge. I thought the least I could do is give my retraction...... unlike some liberal newspapers.

Federal courts imprison innocent civilians

I received a notice to serve on a federal court as a juror...U.S.District Court in San Francisco, CA. I'm self employed with no other income and I employ 5 others that depend on me. Without going into a lot of detail, I sent a hardship letter to the court, expressing the real fact that my business, my livelihood, my family, and my employees' families would be in jeopardy if I were to serve jury duty. My hardship was denied. Apparently the court believes that ruining the business that took me over 26 years to build, starving my family, and putting about 5 people out of work is worth the price of justice. Meanwhile I know plenty of government "civil servants" that are exempt from serving on any jury who would suffer no hardship at all to serve. In addition I know retired "civil servants" that are bored because they got retirement at such an early age, who are exempt. None of the people in power, such as judges, attorneys, representatives, assembly members, governors and others, who are in a position to change this, are ever going to have to serve on a jury.

In case you didn't know, a federal jury requires you to set aside 2 weeks of your life to be on-call with essentially no notice. During this 2 week window, I can't set any appointments with my customers to keep my work backlog going. Since my business involves commercial critical services, I'm afraid to admit to my customers that the contractor they rely on can be disabled by jury duty.

This is repressive and very wrong. It's an abuse of power by the federal government. What choice do I have but to either become broke or a criminal (by not showing)? The very fact that I have to report almost every day for 2 weeks makes my life uncertain and stressful. Then on top of that, to have to serve on a jury for maybe 2 weeks to 3 months, when there are others that would probably love to participate but are exempt, is very wrong.

Although I disagree with forced, coerced citizen juries, I can understand the need for justice in this country. What bothers me is that the courts, in their sheltered world, have put this above all else!

Lie and set yourself free !!!

I finally realized how I can solve all of my problems. Just lie to everyone like our Democrat politicians do all the time. It's difficult at first, but you get used to it after awhile.
Here is a typical debate between a Democrat and Republican...
... Democrat - We can insure an additional 40 million people for less money.
... Republican - No you can't.
... Democrat - Global warming is causing all of this cold weather.
... Republican - No it isn't.
... This country is safer by cutting defense spending and cutting missile defense.
... Republican - No it isn't.
That's why they call the Republicans the party of no.
Soon it will be............
... Democrat - More taxes will make everyone richer.
... Republican - No it won't.
... Democrat - More regulation will make everyone more free.
... Republican - No it won't.
... Democrat - Gravity makes you light headed.
... Republican - No, that's the pot you're smoking!!!

Thomas Sowell - Intellectual

I'm reading "Intellectuals and Society" by Thomas Sowell. I'm only about 2/3 through it. It's a little complicated to read in the beginning... I almost quit. I'm so glad I stuck with it because as it turns out, he was laying some very important groundwork in the beginning that sets up the rest of the book for understanding. Now I can barely put it down. Sowell has given me an understanding of recent history that I never got in school. As in other books by conservative authors, he backs everything up with references that we can all look up. I'm not surprised that throughout history, intellectuals have been proven wrong time-and-again with no "price to pay"... at least no price for themselves, but usually very high prices for the rest of us. Intellectuals are (sometimes) the invisible people that determine what is cool and not cool when it comes to politics, the environment, business attitudes, and many other things that affect all of us. Most of us just go along, just like going along with the popular fads in school. We need to start seeing these "intellectuals" for who they are... mostly spoiled brats with no real life experience !

Thomas Sowell, on the other hand, is a true intellect and philosopher. He has an ability to see things from a perspective that most other "intellectuals" are incapable.

Natural Progression

In nature the natural progression goes from the smallest, weakest creatures, up the food chain to the stronger, and eventually the strongest creatures. I think we all know how this works in cartoons... the smallest fish gets eaten by the larger fish, then the larger fish gets eaten by the largest fish, then the largest fish gets eaten by the bear. Can you imagine if things were reversed and the smallest fish ate the bear? Well this is exactly the philosophy of the Left in this country. They don't believe in the natural progression of wealth. They believe that a lazy welfare recipient should have the same life as the hard working, self educated, tireless, sacrificing, stressed-out, corporate CEO. They believe that the natural progression of wealth should be reversed. The only time this happens in nature is when a virus invades the body. A virus is much smaller and can destroy the much larger creature, but at the end, there is nothing left. A reversal of the natural progression leads to the end of everything, just like the policies of the Left!

Democrats - - - The party of blame

Wouldn't you know it.... the first instinct of Barack Obama is to blame everyone else for the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico instead of leading the effort to contain or stop the leak. This shouldn't surprise anyone as the Democrat party is the party of lawyers, thus the party of blame. No doubt there is some blame to go around, but the time to think about that is after the leak is contained or stopped. In case no one noticed the Republican party is the party of business, thus the party of solutions. Unfortunately the people voted out the party of solutions in the last election so this is what we're left (LEFT) with!!! I have to laugh or cry when I see the media headlines that blast Republican candidates for having money, such as Meg Whitman here in California. Not that Democrats don't have money. Most Democrat politicians have inherited money, most Republican politicians have made money from being good at what they do. It seems to me that if a Republican candidate has money to spend, it must be that they are good at solving problems.

I agree with Mitt Romney that Barack Obama and this administration must get out of the campaign mode and into the leadership mode (if that's possible). I'm beginning to think that Obama is just a polished front man with his dependence on teleprompters and lack of conviction about what is going on around him.

In defense of Obama, I must say that the media sensationalizes everything. Let's keep the oil spill in perspective. I did a google-earth search of the Gulf of Mexico and was not able to locate a single oil drilling rig. Think of an Olympic sized swimming pool in your backyard as a representation of the Gulf. A drilling rig such as the Horizon would be about the size of a pinhead in relation to the pool. Now think of the size of a wellhead pipe in relation to the drilling rig. You wouldn't even see it. This would be like looking for a germ through a microscope!

I'm not making light of the spill. It's bad, especially if it can't be contained soon. Was it really a smart thing to stop all drilling in the gulf... especially if it could possibly relieve the pressure around this wellhead? Soon oil prices will begin to go up, along with gas prices at the pump. Unemployment in the coastal gulf areas will increase. Obama's actions and inactions have consequences. That's why we need real leadership - not blame right now!!! There will be some blame to go around later and I think Obama needs to take some of it!!!

Christmas Songs

Have you noticed that most of the good Christmas songs are from celebrities of 20 - 30 years ago? If you want mood for Christmas you tune in to songs-of-the-season, usually from a long time ago. It's really sad that no celebrities sing about Christmas these days. You can say what you want about the religious aspect of Christmas, but there is also the tradition of Christmas in this country that is quickly disappearing. Doesn't anyone with the good fortune of celebrity prosperity have the "guts" to keep the tradition going?

Man-Made "Pollution" Is Natural

Have you ever wondered why there is not sh** all over the forest? You would think that you couldn't take one step into the forest without stepping into a fresh one, considering the animals don't have toilets, out-houses, or even litter boxes. Isn't it amazing how nature cleans itself up? Most God fearing people believe that there is an awesome balance in nature that keeps our planet intact. For every perceived negative there always seems to be a balanced positive. Since we as humans are part of nature, why is it so hard for liberals to believe that nature has a plan to balance our existence with the planet?

I applaud the efforts of environmentalists in the past to keep the planet clean. I believe this is part of the natural cycle. I don't appreciate when they try to take it too far. I don't believe this is part of the natural cycle and could end up tipping the natural balance. Humans shouldn't play God!

It won't be CO2 that kills the planet. It will be the good intentions of liberals that kill the planet!

I have a plan too !

What if I told you I had a government plan that would eventually result in no children living in poverty? The title is "The Compassion For Children Act of 2009". If you're an Obama follower, you would probably cheer this plan without ever considering the details of the plan. In fact, anyone who would dare to go against this plan must be mean and uncaring... probably a right wing monster!

Here's the plan - The government would set up a system that would allow couples to have children only after extensive government interviews and financial statement reviews. The couples must meet guidelines that would be set up by government bureaucrats for each child. These guidelines must be met every year for the life of each child, otherwise the couple may be required to give the child up for adoption to another couple that meets the requirements and/or the couple may have to pay stiff penalties until the requirements are met. If they refuse to comply, they will be imprisoned.

Shortly after implementation of this plan, only families that meet the strict government guidelines, and have the financial means necessary to raise children will have them. Ultimately no poor people would be allowed to have children under this plan, thus no children would be living in poverty.

... This is an extreme position to make a point. The title of a plan may look good and opponents can be made to look bad by opposing it, but it's what is in a plan that counts for a lot more than titles imply. Are politicians in Washington listening??? I guess we will soon find out. READ THE HEALTH PLAN BEFORE YOU VOTE ON IT!!!

My Fair Share

Let me make sure I understand how this Obama health care thing affects me... I'm an owner of a small union contracting business. I already pay the union for my employee's health coverage, and - in addition, I pay for my own plan (not as good) separately. Now with Obama's plan I will not only pay for my employees, but I will also be taxed to pay for other's health care. After paying all of this extra money, my employees and I get the privilege of waiting in longer lines for our medical problems, as we will have to compete with the 46 million people that will be thrust into the same system. On top of the additional health care burden that I will have, I will be asked to contribute more to the California Calpers retirement and the teachers union retirement as they are going broke. In addition to my contributions to the union retirement for my employees and contributions to my own retirement (meager by most standards), I will be taxed more to support these failed retirement plans. I'm beginning to feel like a small donkey pulling a large group of spoiled kids through a theme park!!!

Hunger in America

By my estimation there are at least 300 million hungry Americans and they are hungry at least 3 times a day. Everyone in America... before breakfast, before lunch, and before dinner. Some are more hungry than others. Usually it's the obese that are more hungry than the rest of us. Why would this be a surprise to anyone???

When politicians talk about hungry Americans, I laugh. I'm hungry all the time, but especially if there is a good restaurant nearby... Please don't feel sorry for me... Of course no one would feel sorry for me anyway... a hard working ordinary white American. I am a (relatively) successful white male American that is hungry at least 5 times a day. I don't expect anyone to care. I just keep giving and giving and giving. Oh well! Pity is for Democrats. I just keep adapting to the new obstacles as they are put in front of me.

Where a feather falls

I have a challenge for all of Al Gore's global warming computer modeling geeks...  "Big Environment". There are so many variables in the climate and for that matter anything that happens in nature, that I believe that it's impossible for a computer to predict an outcome that is even close to reality. Here's my challenge - Pick a point in any city, in any state, at a specified day, time-of-day, month, and year. Have the computer predict where a feather would land if it were dropped from an elevation of only 10 feet. If one of Al Gore's global warming computers gets even within 2 feet of where the feather actually lands, I might start to pay attention (I still think he looks like one of the evil villains in a James Bond movie!).

If we could prove to the Left just how difficult it is to predict or duplicate nature, then maybe we could also include a lesson in how all of the forces of nature also apply in free market capitalism to get the very best results possible... as opposed to a manufactured end result by government mandate!!!

Keep your eyes open !!!

With all of the CHANGES that are coming at blinding speed, we all need to be on our toes in order to survive. Personally, I believe that the government spending will lead to a short term stimulus. Beware though... as inflation creeps in, and we (the U.S.) run out of money, be ready to jump ship. My personal plan is to invest heavily in the stock market in the next 2 years. How can there not be an increase in economic activity with over 3 trillion dollars dropped in our lap? The problem comes later, when the debt comes due, or we run out of money and realize that it was all fiction with no substance. That's when I plan to close up shop, sell all of my stocks, and try not to attract too much attention as I leave town with the shirt on my back!!!  I have to make sure it's before the Obama shirt-on-your-back tax is enacted !!!

Throw the hero out of town !!

The unwinding of our national security under President Obama reminds me of a movie I watched about a gunslinger in the old west that was recruited by a town to get rid of the bad guys. The gunslinger was a hero... until all of the bad guys were gone. I'm pretty sure it was a Clint Eastwood movie !!!

George Bush, with all of his faults, is the real movie hero that chased all the bad guys out of town and I'm SICK about the treatment he gets from the major media and this new administration!!

Now we're so afraid to act in the same way as the hero, that we go out of our way to cozy up to the villains. Well... just like in that movie, as soon as the bad guys realize that the hero is gone, they will be back with a vengeance !
